Calcutta, Oct. 19: Police today seized banned crackers weighing nearly 700kg from a truck on Strand Road, the “biggest” such haul in the past 10 years.
Police said the consignment was being taken to a godown in Burrabazar. They said a Burrabazar trader had ordered the crackers to be delivered to clients in Calcutta and its adjoining districts.
Two persons — Santosh Shaw and Pradip Mandal — were arrested for transporting the crackers, which were manufactured in South 24-Parganas’ Nungi.
“We have alerted our counterparts in the adjoining districts where banned crackers are manufactured. A joint crackdown on manufacturers will be launched with the police of the districts concerned,” an officer of the anti-rowdy squad of Calcutta police’s detective department said.
