A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly killing a business rival, a murder accused who was on bail, during a brawl in Entally on Saptami night.
The victim’s body was found at the Dhapa dumping ground off the EM Bypass on Thursday after motorists and pedestrians complained of a stench.
According to police, Jitu Hela, 35, was hit with a liquor bottle by his associate-turned-rival Arjun Singh, who also has criminal antecedents, and died on the spot.
“Singh then hired a taxi and took the body to Dhapa, where he dumped it. We are looking for the taxi driver,” said an officer of Entally police station.
Hela, who was arrested three months ago in connection with a murder of an extortionist in Beniapukur, was granted bail a month later.
“Both Hela and Singh used to extort traders and hawkers on the Sealdah railway station premises. The duo had also started selling soil excavated for the East-West Metro project between Salt Lake and Sealdah,” said the officer.
“Their relationship soured about a month ago, after Singh allegedly started selling the soil on his own, keeping Hela in the dark,” said an officer in the detective department’s homicide wing.
On Saptami night, Singh was drinking with his friends in a lane off CIT Road, when Hela turned up there alone. “He joined the group. After some time, Hela broached the topic of their rivalry and called Singh a traitor. An altercation broke out, during which Hela kicked Singh,” added the officer.
Singh, who had fallen down after the blow, got back on his feet in a flash and allegedly retaliated by hitting Hela on the head with a bottle.
A cop working on the case said those who were part of the drinking group provided them the lead. “Acting on a tip-off, we picked up Singh from a shanty in Entally where he had taken refuge. He confessed to the crime during interrogation.”
Hela will be produced in Sealdah court on Saturday.
