The deceased belonged to two families and were from a shanty along the tracks.
Police said the Malda-Bamunhat local train was heading towards the car shed at New Cooch Behar around 9.40pm. The incident happened between Cooch Behar and New Cooch Behar stations.
The four who died were identified as Sunil Mahanta, 51, his wife Gita, 50, Sambhu Singh, 20, and his mother Razia, 50. Rana, the 25-year-old son of Sunil and Gita, and Haren Roy were also on the tracks and suffered serious injuries.
“The six persons were sitting on the tracks to watch a procession taken out for the immersion of Durga idols. The procession was passing on a state highway and the six didn’t notice that a train was approaching,” said a police source.
All the six were taken to Maharaja Jitendranarayan District hospital in Cooch Behar, where a doctor declared four of them brought dead.
Rabindranath Ghosh, Trinamul MLA who stays in Cooch Behar town, blamed the railways for the accident and said the driver should have travelled slowly.
