Alipurduar, Oct. 17: This Jalpaiguri district town will hold its first national-level sports meet, a kho kho under-19 girls’ national competition, from October 19 to 23.
The 44th KVS National Meet on kho kho will be held on the grounds of Alipurduar Kendriya Vidyalaya.
P.S. Mitra, the principal of Alipurduar Kendriya Vidyalaya, said: “Our school opened in Alipurduar in 1987. This is the first time such a big event is going to be organised here, done by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Guwahati region.”
The principal said 312 girls from 25 places across the country would take part in the event and 50 officials from different parts of the country would accompany them.
Mitra added that on October 19 at 10am, the meet would be inaugurated by V. Kumar, the divisional railway manager of Alipurduar.
The tournament of the 25 teams will first be in a league format (every team will play every other team).
From the quarter-finals onwards, it will follow the knock-out format — meaning whoever loses exits the tournament.
“All the participants as well as the officials will stay in our school and we are making necessary arrangements so that the participants coming from outside do not face any problem,” Mitra said.
The principal said the town was excited as such a huge event had never been held here.
The referees for the event will be sent by the West Bengal Kho Kho Association.
Except for the opening day, every other day the matches will begin at 9am and finish at 5pm.
The event is being organised under the leadership of K.J. Subba, the deputy commissioner of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Guwahati region.
“We appeal to the people of Alipurduar to witness the event,” Mitra said.
