A self-proclaimed tantrik and two of his friends were arrested from Parnasree on Tuesday night for allegedly raping a girl and blackmailing her. The wife of one of the trio was also arrested as she was allegedly present when the girl was raped.
Deep Chakraborty, 39, had allegedly trapped the 17-year-old by promising to solve her marital problems. Instead, he allegedly raped her along with friends Shantanu Nath, an employee with a private firm, and Asish Dey, who works as a driver. Chakraborty, a resident of Beliadanga in Maheshtala, is a cable operator.
“The victim used to call the tantrik kaku (uncle). She had approached him for help but he exploited her and blackmailed her with pictures and video clips he had taken,” said an officer of Parnasree police station.
Police sources said the girl was lured to Nath’s house on August 29 with the false promise that a ritual would be performed for her marital bliss. She was raped by the three friends, who also took photographs and captured the act on video. Nath’s wife, Mousumi, was allegedly present during the crime.
The girl was repeatedly exploited and blackmailed till she decided to confide in her husband, a group D employee in a bank, last week. She lodged a complaint with Parnasree police station, based on which the arrests were made.
Chakraborty and Dey were arrested from their homes at Beliadanga while the Nath couple were picked up from their house on Abhavidyalankar Road in the Parnasree area.
Nath’s wife told police that she too had been raped by the tantrik and had been forced by her husband to keep quiet as he feared Chakraborty would use black magic to harm him. Her claims are yet to be verified.
The four have been charged under sections 376D (gang rape), 376n (repeated rape) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC and under Sections 6, 12 and 17 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and Section 66B of the IT Act.
