Balurghat, Oct. 15: The body of a 30-year-old woman was found in a puja pandal near here on Sunday.
Police suspect she was raped before being murdered because of the injuries on her body.
The police have arrested a night guard of the pandal and another person.
A source said a resident spotted the woman’s body at the puja pandal of Kaldighi Sarbojanin Puja committee, around 45km from here, on Sunday morning and informed the police. The body was sent to the district hospital in Balurghat, South Dinajpur, for a post-mortem.
“I got a phone call around 6.40am and the caller informed me that the body of a woman was found in our pandal,” said Anjan Chakrabarty, president of the puja committee in Kaldighi.
Anukul Natta, 45, and guard Bhabotosh Gain, 55 who are residents of Gangarampur, were arrested on Sunday.
“The accused cannot be criminals as they are known to us for almost 10-15 years,” said Chakrabarty.
“There were a number of injury marks on the woman’s face and body. It seems she was raped before being murdered. We have arrested two persons. They were produced in the court and have been remanded in police custody for seven days,” said Debarata Mishra, the investigating officer.
