Calcutta/Mapusa: United SC paid for missed chances as Mumbai FC rode Sandjar Ahmadi’s equaliser to hold them 1-1 in a Round IV match of the I-League, at the Balewadi Sports Complex, in Pune, on Wednesday.
United SC will have only themselves to blame as they failed to convert sitters during the initial stages of both halves. They could have gone ahead as early as the second minute, when C.K. Vineeth set Ranty Martins up with a golden opportunity.
Ranty comfortably went past defender Anwar Ali, but his shot hit the woodwork. However, United SC went on the ascendancy in the 16 th minute when Vineeth evaded his marker Valeriano Rebello with sheer pace and calmly slotted the ball past the rival goalkeeper.
United SC’s joys, though, were short-lived as Mumbai FC drew level soon after through Ahmadi. Taking full advantage of an error from goalie Sangram Mukherjee — who palmed an Orok Essien shot straight towards Ahmadi — the Afghan smartly slotted the ball home.
In Mapusa, Dempo SC recovered from a goal down to play out a 1-1 draw against Salgaocar SC at the Duler Stadium. Salgaocar, who looked the better of the two sides especially in the first session, took the lead in the 40th minute through Darryl Duffy.
But Dempo fought back in the latter part of the second half, with Jeje Lalpekhlua scoring the equaliser in the 81st minute. Salgaocar now have seven points after two wins and a draw.
