Jorhat, Oct. 9: The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad today staged a protest against the appointment of D. Ramaiah as the director of CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST) here. Ramaiah took charge today.
Siba Kolita, president of the Jorhat district committee of AJYCP, said they would step up their protest if Ramaiah was not replaced by a scientist from the region.
Ramaiah was the chief scientist of the CSIR-National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science & Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, before being transferred here.
The AJYCP submitted memoranda to Samir K. Brahmachari, director-general, CSIR, who is also the secretary of department of scientific and industrial research (DSIR), government of India, New Delhi, and Union science and technology minister Jaipal Reddy, alleging that scientists of the region had been ignored while selecting officials for responsible positions.
It said in the recent appointment of CSIR-NEIST director, it was noticed that competent and eligible scientists of the institute had once again been ignored/deprived of the position.
The memoranda said this had caused resentment among the people and requested Brahmachari to reconsider the appointment in favour of a scientist of the Northeast in the interest of the region.
