An assistant professor of Presidency University was allegedly assaulted and threatened by members of a local club in Jadavpur on Tuesday morning for his refusal to pay Durga Puja subscription.
Police arrested the secretary of the club’s puja organising committee on Wednesday afternoon after the teacher lodged a complaint.
Kalyan Das, who teaches English at the university, had shifted a week ago from Lake Gardens to a rented apartment on Ibrahimpur Road, Bidhanpally, near 8B-bus stand.
Close to his new home, where he lives alone, Jadavpur Sarbojanin Durgotsav, Bidhanpally, organises a puja. The organisers are members of the club, Friend’s Association.
“Two days ago, the puja committee members came to me for subscription. I had clearly refused because I am against the concept of giving subscription for pujas. If they had sought any other assistance, I would have happily helped,” the young teacher told Metro on Wednesday.
The club members had not specified any amount for the subscription but confronted Das on Tuesday morning when he was about to take a rickshaw from near his house.
“I was ill and on my way to see a doctor. I had barely climbed the rickshaw in front of my home when some of the club members, whom I know by face, confronted me. One of them dragged me off the rickshaw, others assaulted me when I reiterated that I won’t shell out a single rupee as subscription,” Das alleged.
Das did not go to the doctor but returned home. On Wednesday afternoon he went to Jadavpur police station and lodged a complaint.
Based on his complaint, police arrested Jayanta De.
Members of the club denied the allegations and claimed that there was only a heated exchange of words and no physical assault.
“I, along with some members of our club, went to his home on Monday seeking puja subscription. He was very rude and refused to pay. We felt humiliated and came out of the building,” said Shibu Pal, a member of the club.
“On Tuesday, when he was requested to give any amount he wishes to, he started abusing us. As a result, my friends lost their temper and a heated exchange of words ensued. But no one hit him,” Pal added.
“We have arrested the secretary of the puja organising committee. He has been charged with extortion, voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation under several sections of the IPC,” said an officer of Jadavpur police station.
