Calcutta: Coach Marcos Falopa is counting on the new faces as East Bengal get ready to face Lajong FC on Wednesday. Abhishek Das and Seiminlen Doungel are the two new faces who have travelled to Shillong and Falopa is confident the duo will deliver.
“It’s a big chance for them. I am sure they will live up to their potential,” Falopa said.
While Abhishek is all set to start, it’s not yet clear whether Seiminlen will also make the first eleven. However, he is sure to play some part during the latter stages of the game.
Falopa defended his decision to rest key players for the tie. Mehtab Hussain, Arnab Mondal, Saumik Dey, Gurpreet Singh and Naoba Singh have all been rested keeping in mind the crucial AFC Cup semi-final return leg against Kuwait SC on October 22.
“First of all, they were not rested. I have just given them time to recharge their batteries. They are training every day. It’s not right to say that I have rested some players.”
Falopa said he would be trying out new options. “I will be trying out a few options… But that is what I usually do.”
Falopa said he wouldn’t have preferred to play an I-League match at the present situation.
“Ideally, I wouldn’t have preferred playing I-League matches before October 22.
“The matches are too close to each other for comfort. But we can’t help… That’s what the system is and so, we will have to adjust.”
Falopa is aware of his team’s Lajong jinx, but is not losing his sleep over it.
“I don’t think about the past. I’m only interested in the present… I’m sure we will do well. We just need to play our best game.”
