The Kanchenjungha awash in glittering glory was visible to the naked eye from Raiganj on Tuesday morning for three hours till noon, the first time in recent memory that the North Dinajpur town has caught such a clear glimpse of the majestic Himalayas.
The peak is usually not visible from Raiganj, over 550km away from the Kanchenjungha base camp, though the town falls more or less directly behind Siliguri, the foothill town from where the Himalayas can be seen occasionally.
The situation changed on Tuesday morning probably because of less dust in the atmosphere after four days of heavy rain in the North Dinajpur town.
Among those who stampeded out of their homes in the morning to take in the sight was Parimal Pal, a 70-year-old resident. He recalled that “when we were kids, we could see the snow-capped peaks”. Picture by Nantu Dey
