Ranchi, Oct. 6: Jharkhand State Cricket Association’s (JSCA) president Amitabh Choudhary is padding up for a new innings, this time in the field of politics.
The former IPS held a Jago Matdata (wake up voters) rally at Vidhan Sabha grounds today in an attempt to mobile mass support for his new venture.
However, rain played a spoilsport as Choudhary took to the political pitch for the first time to feel the pulse of the citizens.
As soon as the rally began in the afternoon, heavy downpour forced around 15,000 supporters, including those affiliated to various sports associations, who came from different parts of the state capital, to run for a cover. While some took shelter under trees, others stayed inside their vehicles.
The half-an-hour rain, nevertheless, failed to dampen the spirit of Choudhary. “Varsha hona subha hai (rain is a good omen). I will be coming here again very soon,” he commented, while walking past the muddy grounds to meet his supporters in person.
A former additional director-general of police, Choudhary is reported to be in regular touch with the BJP and the JVM leaders to secure a ticket for contesting the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat, but he wouldn’t say anything on record at the moment.
“No comments please,” he said, when asked which party he would like to join and whether he was really serious about contesting the coming Lok Sabha polls.
“At the moment, my only motive is to evoke consciousness among the common voters,” he added, while interacting with the supporters.
Then, he turned to one of his trusted lieutenants and ordered him to ensure each of 5,000 supporters who stayed back even after the rain received lunch packets.
“We have sufficient lunch packets available here. These will never fall short. Just see that they are distributed properly and no one returns hungry,” he added.
His close aides confided that through this public meeting, Choudhary tried to feel the pulse of the commoners.
“He has held two meetings here in the past, and intends to hold another rally soon. The Hatia Assembly segment has been a traditional bastion of Ranchi MP Subodh Kant Sahay, but of late Ajsu party has been trying to strengthen its base here. If Choudhary can manage to gain a strong foothold here, his fight for the Ranchi Lok Sabha seat would become easier,” said a close confidant of Choudhary.
