Calcutta, Oct. 6: A Howrah couple riding back home with their 13-year-old son from his hostel in Hooghly for the Pujas were crushed under the wheels of a truck on NH2 last evening.
Rajib Saha, a Class VI student of Shatavisha Public School in Haripal, escaped with minor injuries in the accident near Dankuni.
Residents said the boy was so shaken seeing his parents die under the wheels of the trailer that he went to a roadside shop and sat down quietly. When people asked him if anything was wrong, the teenager fainted before telling them that his parents had died in the accident.
Sources said the family hailed from Domjur in Howrah and the boy had been studying at the residential school in Haripal from Class I.
Police said Rabindranath Saha, 45, who owned a motorcycle repair shop in Domjur, probably lost control of his bike on the NH2 stretch that had turned slippery after the downpour yesterday.
“Around 9pm, the three were returning home when the bike skidded off the road and hit a truck from behind. The bike was hit by a trailer coming from behind. The boy escaped probably because he was thrown off,” an officer of Domjur police station said.
It was not immediately clear if the three were wearing helmets. The couple were declared dead at Uttarpara state general hospital.
The police have seized the trailer but the driver and the helper fled.
After Rajib lost consciousness while narrating the incident yesterday, he was taken to Serampore Walsh Hospital and was released after being administered a first-aid. He performed the last rites of his parents this evening.
