Shillong, Oct. 5: Shillong cannot have a world class golf course if people staying around it are not well-off, said secretary, department of higher education in the ministry of human resource development, Ashok Thakur here today.
“Development or excellence cannot come without equity,” Thakur said in the evening during the business summit on the occasion of IIM Shillong Golf Cup Season 6, which started this morning at Shillong Golf Course.
The director of IIM Shillong, Amitabha De, welcomed the participants while Meghalaya minister for health and family welfare A.L. Hek declared the tournament open with the ceremonial tee off at 6.30am.
Government officials, army personnel and local golf enthusiasts in Shillong, including a representative of IIM Shillong, participated in it.
Thakur said there are people who can afford to play golf, but there are also others who cannot dream of playing it. “Unless people staying around the area do not come to that level, Shillong cannot have a world class golf course,” Thakur said, adding that the golf course belongs to people of the area.
He said inclusive growth is a must for the overall development of the area and one has to “carry everybody”.
The tournament follows Stableford format in the 18-hole Shillong golf course, which is one of the oldest golf courses in the world, apart from being the largest in Asia.
On the quality of teaching at IIMs, Thakur said it is several notches above the central universities. “The mode of teaching is several levels higher compared to other universities. The capacity to work hard among students of IIMs is tremendous,” he said.
Thakur said one of the main concerns of educational administrators of the country is ensuring quality education. He asked IIM Shillong to look to the information and communication technology (ICT) method. There are 500 universities in the country which are hooked to the National Knowledge Network. “You (IIM Shillong) will have to look at new areas,” Thakur said. He said the ministry would soon start 50 educational TV channels. Sources said these would beam live lectures by reputed academics.
Khlur-Thma: The annual management fest of IIM Shillong also commenced on the first day of IIM Shillong Golf Cup Season 6.
