Nagaon, Oct. 4: Assam Rifles, Tezpur played a 1-1 draw with Oil India FC, Duliajan in a quarter-final league match of the 65th Independence Day Cup all-India invitation football tournament, organised by Nowgong Sports Association at Nurul Amin Stadium here today.
Striker M. Kamei put Assam Rifles ahead in the 39th minute to help the side lead by a solitary goal at lemon break.
Oil India men regrouped in the second session to launch a series of attacks on the opponent’s castle and soon derived the desired result through striker Mithun Basumatary who found the net with a spectacular free kick for the equaliser in the 55th minute.
The rest of the match was a keen contest with both sides failing to penetrate the defence barricade at the goalmouth on most occasions. The frontliners on either side also squandered chances at the goalmouth.
In spite of the draw, both Assam Rifles and Oil India have qualified from their group for the round of four.
Green Valley SC, Guwahati meet Assam Rifles and Oil India lock horns with Langsning Football Club, Shillong in the two semi-final matches tomorrow.
Chess meet: The Guwahati Chess Association (GCA) is organising the Guwahati Chess Championship at Shilpgram here from October 10 to 13. Players will be selected from the meet to represent the Kamrup Metro team in the All Assam Inter-District Championship to be held in Nagaon in December.
