Dhubri, Oct. 4: Durga Puja is here and so are innovative ideas.
While some use coir ropes to shape the divinity, some lift a whole Dholakpur out of the idiot box and place it bang in the middle of Bengali’s favourite festival, replete with Chhota Bheem and the works.
Chatiantola Community Puja will celebrate its golden jubilee this year while Balurchar Durga Puja Celebration Committee will set up a replica of a popular cartoon character Chhota Bheem.
Chatiantola is in the heart of the town by the river Gadadhar.
For the past seven years, the Puja was exclusively organised by the women of the locality.
The secretary of the Puja committee, Sukalpa Choudhury, said they were trying to put up something new this time to celebrate their golden jubilee.
“On Sashthi, we have organised art, quiz and sports competitions for the children. On Dashami, we will take out a procession,” Choudhury said.
The main attraction of the Puja will be the gods and goddesses — Durga, Ganesh, Kartik, Saraswati, Lakshmi — made of coir ropes by a local artisan, Pradip Ghose.
Chatiantola Community Puja was started by Bratindra Roy and his friends, a source in the committee said.
On the other hand, Balurchar Community Puja will put up a replica of popular cartoon character Chhota Bheem to attract children.
The secretary of the committee, Gautam Choudhury, said they would put up a huge pandal where cartoon cutouts of Chhota Bheem would be displayed.
“The total cost of constructing a replica of Dholakpur village will be around Rs 2 lakh. We have been celebrating Puja based on the various themes, including green drives and cleanliness, since 1998,” Choudhury said.
The secretary of Sabuj Sangha Puja Committee, Tapan Dey, told The Telegraph that besides putting up a huge replica of a temple in Calcutta, they would also organise a musical function only of religious songs on Ashtami night.
This year, altogether 74 community Pujas will be held in the town while over 400 in the district.
