Alipurduar, Oct. 3: Little over a month after a CID bomb squad member died when the explosive device he was called to defuse went off in Alipurduar, police today burst open two tiffin boxes found near here suspecting they had bombs.
One of the container, however, had daal and rice that a person claimed was his lunch.
The other box was empty.
Around 3.30am today, a tiffin box was found near the bus terminus here and the local people informed the police. They took it to a field and cordoned off the area before informing the bomb squad.
At 9.30am, Dulal Saha, owner of a pan shop claimed the container. “My wife had given rice in it yesterday. I forgot the box here and went home. When I came to know about the bomb hoax, I claimed it.”
The police did not take a chance today. At 1.30pm, the bomb squad arrived but they had to wait for scanners. When scanning started at 3pm, local people found another tiffin carrier near the bus terminus.
A squad member wearing a bomb suit burst both the boxes open with water canons.
“We have written to officials for a bomb squad here,” said Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police.
