Mumbai, Oct. 3: Senior IPS officer Ranjit Sahay, who was hospitalised with burns after he allegedly attempted suicide at his Malabar Hill home on September 15, succumbed to his injuries today.
Although police had suspected a case of attempted suicide, his family said the 52-year-old had mistakenly burnt himself when he was performing puja.
“His family had claimed that he accidentally spilled a bottle of petrol kept in the puja room where he was performing a havan,” an officer said.
However, the police could not record his statement because of his condition.
Sahay remained in the intensive care unit of the hospital nearly two weeks before his condition turned critical yesterday evening.
