New Delhi, Oct. 3: The anti-trafficking unit of Jharkhand police today recorded the statements of a Sahebganj girl, who was allegedly tortured by her employer in Delhi till she was rescued by police and NGO workers on Monday.
The 17-year-old, who belongs to the Murmu community in Bartoli village, is known to have told the six-member team that she had migrated to Delhi three years ago and had been working as a full-time maid at Vandana Dhir’s residence in Vasant Kunj for the past year. Before that, she had worked in houses in Noida and Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi.
The teenager alleged that 50-year-old Vandana, a senior executive with a French MNC who was arrested on Tuesday, used to regularly beat her up with knives, stick and brooms. The girl, is now in Safdarjung Hospital, was given minimal food and kept almost naked so that she could not run away.
She has also told police that she was brought to Delhi by her “aunt”, whose identity and whereabouts are yet to be established. Police are also yet to track down the placement agency, which served as the broker between the “aunt” and the employer. The agency is believed to be located in a South Delhi locality called Kotla Mubarakpur.
Joint commissioner of police, Delhi, Vivek Gogia also visited the girl today. At a meeting with NGO members who were part of the rescue operation and CPM leader Brinda Karat, Delhi police commissioner Bhim Singh Bassi said relevant sections of SC/ST act would be also invoked against Vandana, who was sent to 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday. Police will oppose her bail plea when it comes up for hearing tomorrow.
Vandana, a divorcee who lives with her 90-year-old mother, is already facing charges of using dangerous weapons to cause grievous hurt and of enforcing bonded labour on the tribal girl. However, she has denied all allegations.
Assistant resident commissioner, Jharkhand, Sanjay Kumar said all possible help would be extended to the minor girl and her family.
Meanwhile, in the Phulmani Nagesia death case, a team from Jharkhand police failed to arrest her employer, Anil Ahuja, a restaurateur in NCR, as he is absconding. However, the alleged trafficker, Satya, and the owner of the placement agency that had placed the 16-year-old as a maid in Ahuja’s Kaushambi home have been arrested.
Phulmani was found dead on June 19 this year.
