Ranchi, Oct. 1: Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh reached Ranchi this evening apparently to review functioning of the Hemant Soren government vis-à-vis the common minimum programme.
He will be chief guest at the inauguration of Aadhaar-enabled direct transfer of MGNREGS payments through post offices in Ranchi tomorrow.
Today, soon after his arrival, Ramesh held a meeting with the chief minister to discuss various issues, including progress of different rural development schemes and Saranda development project.
But, state finance minister Rajendra Prasad Singh, who was present in the meeting, refused to divulge anything. “I cannot give details of discussions between the Union minister and the chief minister. They are the competent persons to talk on this,” Singh argued.
Sources said the Union minister also discussed the issue of mining in Saranda forests area. Ramesh has been against mining activities in virgin areas of Saranda even by public sector undertakings.
But, unlike Ramesh’s previous tours, the state Congress office is not aware of his itinerary. “We have only verbally been informed about his arrival and stay in the state capital tonight,” said Congress spokesperson Shailesh Sinha.
Even senior party leaders are not aware of the “real purpose” of Ramesh’s visit.
