Jorhat, Sept. 30: Majuli has turned into a high-conflict zone with supporters of the Ganashakti and the Congress clashing for the fifth time since the dates for Mising Autonomous Council election were announced a month ago.
Polls to the Mising Autonomous Council will be held on October 3 and 7.
Three persons, two of Ganashakti and one of the Congress, were wounded in the clashes that took place last night and today.
Besides, sitting legislator and state water resources minister Rajiv Lochan Pegu was barred from addressing an election meeting at Bapusola Mising Gaon this afternoon. The people heckled Pegu and did not allow him to address the meeting, saying “the Congress has done nothing for the village and visits it only to seek votes.”
Last night, Sachin Pegu, a Ganashakti supporter, was allegedly beaten up and attacked with sharp weapons by Congress workers at Jengrai. He was admitted to Garmur Government Hospital, which today referred him to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. A Congress worker injured in the scuffle was given first aid.
This morning, Amulya Payeng of Silakhola gaon panchayat was allegedly beaten up by Congress workers at Garmur. He was hospitalised.
