New Delhi, Sept. 30: Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has written to chief ministers saying wrongfully detained minority community members should be immediately released, compensated and rehabilitated.
“Strict action (should be taken) against erring police officers where there is mala fide arrests of any member of (the) minority community… the persons should not only be released immediately but should be suitably compensated and rehabilitated to join the mainstream,” Shinde was quoted by sources as having written in the letter.
Shinde said the Centre had received complaints of “harassment of innocent Muslim youths” on the pretext of terror probes.
At last week’s National Integration Council meeting, Shinde’s ministry drew fire for presenting separate figures on the Muzaffarnagar riot victims based on their religion.
Another reason why Shinde’s communication to chief ministers raised the hackles is that law and order is a state subject.
