Chennai: A call offering congratulations every two minutes!
That was Odisha Cricket Association president Ranjib Biswal’s ‘strike rate’ in the hours immediately after his appointment as the IPL’s chairman.
Around 7 pm on Sunday, Biswal (a former India U-19 captain) spoke to The Telegraph at the Park Sheraton Hotel & Towers.
Q Has a crown of thorns been placed on your head?
A (Smiles) It’s a responsibility... A responsibility to run the IPL well and to make the next edition, in 2014, a mega success. I look at things positively.
Over the years, you’ve held many positions in the BCCI. Where does the chairmanship of the IPL rank?
Look, no position is big or small. I have the fondest memories of our 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy wins when I was the manager. Now, I hope to do justice to this role. As I’ve said, it’s a responsibility. I’m grateful to the Board.
You’re seen as being particularly close to Narayanswamy Srinivasan, the Board president. Will you actually function independently?
But the IPL’s governing council is part of the Board, it comes under the Board.
Quite a few have called for the banishment of the Chennai Super Kings because of the things that have happened. Where do you stand?
The matter is sub judice, so I wouldn’t like to say anything.
What’s your No.1 challenge?
I’m aware that a lot of things happened in the last edition of the IPL, but I’ve just been appointed the chairman. First, I’d like to meet colleagues on the governing council and get their views. After that, the operational team of the IPL... A road map will be drawn where cricket is the priority.
So, it will be cricket first...
Indeed. Serious T20 cricket.
Should the Board and the governing council have more control over the franchises?
This is something to be discussed... Generally, I’m not for more control, but everybody — players, officials — being aware of their responsibilities. That, for me, is critical.
Lastly, how will you make the next edition of the IPL better than the previous ones?
I do have plans, but it won’t be proper to lay my cards on the table within a few hours of being appointed the chairman. Please be patient.
