Calcutta: Calcutta and Mumbai remain the front-runners to host what will be Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th Test, and the second against West Indies, later this year.
Both the cities had put in a formal request to have the honour of holding the milestone Test.
Till recently Mumbai was the favourite to get the nod. But because of the possibility of a change of guard at the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) after its elections, which is scheduled to be held within a few weeks, those calling the shots in the Board may not grant the match to Mumbai.
If that happens, Calcutta will be the beneficiary.
By rotation, Ahmedabad and Bangalore are due to host Tests. So one of them is all set to host first Test against the Windies, which will also be Sachin’s 199th.
It couldn’t be confirmed, but there appeared to be some talk in Chennai (on the sidelines of the Board’s AGM) to give Sachin’s 200th Test to Brabourne and CCI, thereby ensuring that at least The Master’s hometown gets to host the momentous match if not his home ground.
A section is also of the view that Sachin himself has requested the BCCI to award the 200th Test to Mumbai. If that is so, then the Board would not be in a position to say no.
