Malda, Sept. 29: A 29-year-old labourer was beaten up by villagers and handed over to Englishbazar police yesterday for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl from the same area.
Police sources said Ranjan Mondol and three other youths tried to rape the girl, a resident of a village 12km from here, while she was going home from school.
The girl’s father, a daily wage labourer, said his daughter reached school late yesterday and was not allowed to attend classes. “She came back crying and told us that on her way back she was accosted by Ranjan and three other youths whom she did not recognise. They dragged her to a mango grove and tried to gag and rape her. The youths fled when they saw some villagers. My daughter ran back home,” he said.
After the news spread, villagers went to Ranjan’s house and thrashed him. Later, when a team from Englishbazar police station arrived in the area the youth was handed over.
Dilip Kumar Karmakar, the officer-in-charge of Englishbazar police station, said: “The father filed a complaint naming Ranjan and three others. The girl has suffered bruises and has been admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital. The arrested man is also in the hospital. A case under Section 354 (assault or criminal force on women to attempt to outage her modesty) and Protection of Children Against Sexual offences Act has started.”
The body of a 30-year-old homemaker was found in Ghaksol village near Gajole on Sunday.
Police sources said Sumati Sarkar, whose husband works as a labourer in Kerala, was missing since Saturday.
Malda police chief Kalyan Mukherjee said: “We are waiting for the post-mortem report to know the cause of death.”
