Jorhat, Sept. 29: An organisation to preserve the historical background, heritage and culture of the region, Society for Preservation of Heritage and Culture, was formed here today.
The scion of the Ahom royal family, Ajit Narayan Singha, noted numismatist of the Northeast O.P. Gattani and educationist Prafulla Rajguru will be the conveners of the organisation.
A booklet on ancient coin collection by Gattani was released in English and Assamese at the function.
Announcing the formation of the organisation, tea planter Abhijit Sarmah said there was an urgent need for an organisation to preserve the rich historical background, heritage and culture of the region. “It is unfortunate that Assam does not have such an organisation. This has led to neglect of a number of monuments and other objects of our heritage and culture,” Sarmah, a former chairman of the Assam Tea Planters’ Association, said.
He said the three-member committee will meet soon on the purpose and functioning of the organisation, which will include historians, educationists and intellectuals. It will generate awareness among people, especially the youths, across the state.
Jorhat deputy commissioner Solanki Vishal Vasant said the education department will be asked to include Gattani’s coin collection centre in the Gyanyatra tour, which takes school students to scientific research institutions and educational institutes.
