Calcutta/Ranchi: Cricket has taken Michael Hussey to different corners of the globe. But the Australian admitted that he has never seen anything even similar to what he has been witnessing in Ranchi for the last few days. The question was about the city’s love for their hero Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australian had only one word to describe it — “amazing”.
After the Chennai Super Kings’ thumping eight-wicket victory over Brisbane heat in the Group B game on Saturday, Hussey, Man of the Match for his unbeaten 57-run innings, was happy for his team making it to the semi-finals, but didn’t wish to look beyond that.
The following are excerpts
Mahendra Singh Dhoni: I think it was a very good performance. Our bowlers, especially the spinners did a very good job. It wasn’t easy for the spinners to do well on this surface, as there was a fair bit of dew. It gripped a bit for them, but they bowled superb lengths. All our three spinners — Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Suresh Raina — complemented each other really well. Jadeja is one bowler who is improving really fast and with more games, he will improve further. Ashwin is the smartest of the lot and has become very effective. Raina knows his limitations very well. He has become an ideal foil for Ashwin and Jadeja. It was lovely to see him bowl flighted deliveries to the left-handers. However, death bowling is still an area we need to improve.
James Hopes: I think poor performance would be an understatement. We got off to a pretty good start only to lose our way in the middle. Once again our batsmen couldn’t do their job properly. We had made 50-odd runs in six overs and that usually sets you up for at least 160. It was a beautiful batting track and we let ourselves down.
Michael Hussey (MoM): We had a great game today… Yes, our spinners bowled very well. Actually, since we bowled first, our spinners could extract spin as the ball was drier. As it became wet, they found it difficult to get a grip. For us, (Ravichandran) Ashwin was just brilliant… And (Ravindra) Jadeja provided excellent support.
I enjoy good rapport on the crease with all the Super Kings players. But yes, it’s special with Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina… With Raina, I enjoy it more because he has such an array of shots. We are very happy to be in the semis… But we are not looking beyond our next match, which is against the Trinidad and Tobago… We have played well, but there are areas where we can improve and we will work on those.
