Sivasagar, Sept. 28: The Sivasagar district administration has made elaborate arrangements for free and fair polls for both the Sonowal Kachari and Mising Autonomous Council elections.
While the Sonowal Kachari election will be held in one phase on Monday, the Mising polls will be held in two phases on October 3 and 7. State election commissioner Biren Dutta told this correspondent today that all arrangements are in place for smooth conduct of polls. Twenty-six members will be elected while four will be nominated to the 30-member Sonowal Kachari council. In Sivasagar district, Rajabari constituency of the council will go to the polls on Monday.
Sivasagar deputy commissioner S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram said 5,144 voters in 19 villages of the constituency will cast their votes in 10 polling stations. “Polling officials and materials will reach their respective booths on Sunday,” he added. He said three candidates have filed their nominations for the constituency.
Similarly, election to Dehing Desang constituency of the Mising council in Sivasagar district will be held on October 3. “12,172 voters will decide the fate of four candidates,” he said. Sundaram said security has been tightened in the district to prevent any law and order problem during the elections. “Counting for the two constituencies will be on October 10,” he added. The Congress remains the party to beat but BJP is likely to put up a fight.
The Assam government yesterday declared a public holiday in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts for the Sonowal Kachari council election besides declaring dry days on Sunday and Monday in the districts. It also declared a public holiday on October 3 in these eight districts and in Sonitpur for the Mising polls.
