Silchar, Sept. 28: Nazrul Islam, 23, the youth who was kidnapped from Katlicherra block in Hailakandi of south Assam on Thursday night by militants from the Reang community, was released today.
Police sources in Hailakandi said the gang of 10 armed militants had to release Islam as they realised that the youth’s family would not be able to raise the ransom amount.
Sources said the Jamira police patrol unit received a phone call last night saying that Islam was spotted near a jungle grove in Kukinala.
After his release, the police got Islam medically examined to ascertain his health.
Islam told the police that the militants, who were talking among themselves in Reang language, had intermittently subjected him to bouts of physical torture. Intelligence sources in Hailakandi town said at present there are two Reang gangs, the Bru Liberation Army and the Bru National Liberation Front, but they could not confirm which of these gangs were responsible for the recent attacks and kidnappings in the district.
Islam’s abduction was the seventh by militants in the district in the past two months. Katlicherra enclave is under the Assembly constituency of Congress strongman and PHE minister Goutam Roy.
Meanwhile, the Bru Students’ Association of Barak Valley have taken exception to a reported recent statement by the state cabinet minister for border affairs, Siddeque Ahmed, that the raids by the armed Reang militants would be met with guns by the people in Hailakandi district.
