Bongaigaon, Sept. 28: Bongaigaon police this morning arrested four workers of the rival faction of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) after receiving an FIR from the Biswajit Ray faction of the union.
They were later produced in the court of the chief judicial magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
A group of youths yesterday allegedly attacked All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union president Biswajit Ray at Borpara in Bongaigaon town, 180 km from Guwahati, when he was going to print some documents. Ray was hit with bamboo sticks and received blows on his right eye. His car was also damaged and overturned. Police have registered a case (488/2013) under Sections 146, 326, 307, 379, 227, 427 of the IPC against the accused.
The additional superintendent of police, Bongaigaon, Ripul Das, said the accused had been identified as Bhabesh Ray, Ratul Ray, Luku Singha and Uday Singha who are members of the Hiteswar Barman faction of the AKRSU. Following the attack on Biswajit Ray yesterday, his supporters enforced a 24-hour Bongaigaon district bandh from last evening till 6pm today. The bandh passed off peacefully.
Das said the situation was totally under control. Ray, who is undergoing treatment at Lower Assam Hospital Research Centre here, is out of danger and needs rest, doctors said. Transport minister Chandan Brahma met Ray and enquired about his condition. He also met Ray’s father Dharmeswar Ray, a retired school clerk. Brahma said such incidents should not be repeated.
“We condemn the incident. We will never support such a clash between two rival groups of AKRSU as it will affect peace and harmony in the locality,” local Congress leader Girish Baruah said.
Rajendra Narayan Deb, a retired schoolteacher and social activist, said Ray’s comment on the Bodoland issue at Kokrajhar was his individual opinion. Barman said he had appealed to his supporters to be patient and remain calm. He denied their involvement in the attack. He alleged that it was done by people who are demanding Kamtapur state. He said they would call an indefinite bandh from Monday if the four persons arrested today were not released by then.
