Calcutta: Only 12.3 overs were possible on the opening day of the S.K. Acharya Challenger Trophy at the JU Salt Lake Campus ground, on Friday.
The Bengal Senior-Bengal A match started around 2 pm due to a wet outfield, but had to be called off 40 minutes before scheduled close because of bad light.
It’s unlikely that any play will be possible on Saturday after Friday evening’s downpour.
In such an event, the match could spill on to the reserve day, Sunday. A reserve day has been kept for every match.
The tournament, which has seen numerous postponements since the first week of September, is likely to run into further trouble if the weather persists over the weekend.
Bengal A decided to bat first and were 66 for no loss at the close. Jayojit Basu (31 batting) and Purab Joshi (27 batting) had little difficulty in tackling the Bengal Senior bowling, which showed very little variation in the sultry and humid conditions.
There was very little help for the bowlers from the wicket, and it seemed the batsmen would get some crucial batting practice in the lead-up to the season.
Meanwhile, Bengal Senior’s Sourav Mondal injured his ankle during warm-up and was forced to sit out. It was a result of the slippery outfield.
