Three held for school clash

Alipurduar, Sept. 27: Three CPM activists were arrested from Chechakhata here last night in connection with yesterday’s violence between supporters of the CPM and Trinamul at Shyamaprasad Boys High School.

Today, the three persons were produced in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate and have been remanded in jail custody for 14 days.

Yesterday, at least 25 persons were injured in the clash during the submission of nominations for the school’s managing committee election.

Both the parties had lodged separate complaints with Alipurduar police naming more than 10 people.

Those who were picked up last night are Swapan Majumder, Shankar Barua and Ganesh Dutta, all residents Chechakhata in Alipurduar.

Krishno Banerjee, secretary of Jalpaiguri district committee of the CPM, said: “Last night, policemen behaved as members of a Trinamul team. They raided the houses of our people and arrested three supporters. Two of them were not even present at the time of the incident. Only one person’s name is there in the FIR. But the police have arrested two others also. Trinamul has adopted a policy to spread terror in the state. We had also lodged an FIR yesterday but the police have not arrested any one from that list.”

He could not say whose name was mentioned in the FIR.

This is the first time Alipurduar witnessed such violence during the nomination process for a school committee election.

Akash Magharia, the additional superintendent of police, Alipurduar, said: “We are conducting raids and will arrest everybody named in the FIRs.”

Today, both the CPM and Trinamul organised rallies in town to protest the incident.
