Guwahati, Sept. 27: Three Assam players were named in the East Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy tournament, leaving a few others disappointed despite their creditable performance in the Ranji Trophy tournament last season.
Those named in the squad include pacer Abu Nechim Ahmed and batsmen Tarjinder Singh and Pallab Das.
Assam Ranji coach Subhrajit Saikia and physical trainer Rakesh Gohil have also been named coach and trainer of the zonal squad.
The team was selected in the zonal selection committee meeting in Ranchi today.
The selection, however, left seasoned players Dheeraj Jadhav, Arlen Konwar and India Blues player Sibsankar Roy disappointed.
“The age factor went against Dheeraj and Arlen. They were the first two names in my list, but the selection panel chairman Syed Saba Karim started the meeting categorically, stating the policy that we will be selecting a team from among the youngsters so that we can take them a step ahead in the future,” Saikia, who represented Assam in the meeting, said.
“Like them, even Laxmi Ratan Shukla and a few others were also not considered in the meeting.
The 25-year-old Sunny Gupta, who tallied 26 wickets for Jharkhand in last season, was preferred in place of Arlen because of his age,” he added.
Jadhav is 34 years old while Konwar is 32. Both had a fruitful Ranji season last year with Konwar topping the zonal spinners’ wicket taking tally with a haul of 32.
“These things are so demoralising. If age comes as a factor despite performance, it becomes demotivating. There are lot of older players than me who are still performing, sometimes even better than some of them in Team India,” lamented Konwar.
Roy’s name was not considered due to lack of a slot to fit him in the top order. He is currently playing in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy tournament in Indore.
About the squad, Saikia said, “It is a balanced side with a perfect blend of gritty yet experienced youngsters.”
Lawn bowls: The third division ranking tournament of Assam Lawn Bowling Association will get under way at the Sarusajai Sports Complex green here tomorrow.
