Five villages were inundated on Thursday night because of a 40-foot breach in the embankment of Tirhut canal.
Residents of Madhol, Turki, Kafen, Kodarya and Bazidpur villages, whose huts and crops were damaged, blamed the administration and the engineers deputed to work on the river for the damage. The farmers blocked Muzaffarpur-Hajipur National Highway 77 near Madhol village from 9am to 11am and demanded compensation for the loss of paddy crops and their thatched houses.
“The pressure of water in the river owing to torrential rain on Thursday night breached the embankment near Madhol village,” said water resources department executive engineer Anil Kumar Sharma.
Madhol village mukhiya (village head) Rameshwar Mahto said the breach had occurred owing to carelessness of the officials concerned and their failure to strengthen the weak spot.
