A stellar show of 11 goals by Shahid Parvez helped Jharkhand men claim the title at the 18th East Zone Handball Championship, which ended in Patna on Wednesday evening.
The state women’s team, however, had to be content with fourth rank.
Jharkhand men prevailed over rivals from Odisha to clinch a 30-23 win in the final.
Aggressive attack by Jharkhand players pushed Odisha on the backfoot from the start. Jharkhand went into the lemon break with an emphatic 16-9 lead.
The state squad held on to their good form on the other side of the break and finished winners.
While Parvez was undoubtedly the top scorer with his outstanding 11, teammates Md Azhar and Md Shahid contributed a handsome eight goals each. Avinash also scored four goals.
The eves from Jharkhand, however, faced a 13-19 defeat at the hands of the Bihar team at the semi-finals.
Then, the hopes of Jharkhand women bagging the third spot at the tourney were laid to rest when they lost to Bengal 9-13 in the clash for the third spot.
They ended up fourth.
Jharkhand State Handball Association secretary Khurshid Khan and coach Firoz Khan attended the prize distribution ceremony.
“We were confident of the victory of the men but had doubts over the performance of our women. We’ll conduct training camps at regular intervals to fine-tune their skills,” Khan said.
The state handball outfit had hosted an exhaustive training camp at JRD Tata Sports Complex in the run-up to the zonal meet. The state women’s outfit had displayed good form during the camp but failed to perform at the zonal meet.
