A 40-year-old woman was found dead and her male friend injured at her rented house near Baghajatin on Thursday afternoon. A preliminary probe suggests the two attacked each other with kitchen knives and consumed poison after the fight.
Meenakshi Dutta Chowdhury was declared dead when police took her to hospital. Her friend Saroj Rai, in his early 50s, has been admitted to MR Bangur Hospital in a “critical” condition.
The police, however, are yet to find out what had happened between the two and how the woman died.
Meenakshi, who had been living in the two-room flat with her mother and brother, had apparently got married to Rai a few days ago at a temple.
Rai, a resident of Suryanagar near Regent Park, was already married and has two children.
The police said he worked for a security agency, which had allegedly sacked him a fortnight ago.
Sources said that around 11.45am, Meenakshi’s physically challenged mother saw her lying in a pool of blood and Rai lying unconscious near her.
Her screams alerted the neighbours, who got in touch with Patuli police station.
