Guwahati, Sept. 25: In a rare case of mistaken identity, the Gauhati Town Club was today compelled to cancel its proposed magic show Indrajaal by magician P.C. Sorcar (Young) to be held here on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“We have decided to cancel the show to avoid getting embroiled in a controversy,” GTC general secretary Devajit Saikia said.
The club has requested ticket holders to collect the refund against the purchased tickets from GTC office at Judges Field or from Art Group office at Chatribari before September 30.
Tickets worth about Rs 8 lakh were already sold out.
“We received a video from the magician after we signed the contract and it was beamed on local TV channels as promotional. However, when the event managers (Art Group) printed the tickets and other promotional for the show, they used the photo of P.C. Sorcar (Junior), who is almost identical in appearance to his brother whom we had contacted. When we discovered the faux pas, we decided to cancel the show because it could lead to complications,” Saikia said.
Saikia said the club has incurred a financial loss of about Rs 6 lakh in cancelling the show.
“We have already paid about Rs 4 lakh to the magician and the remaining Rs 1 lakh will be cleared in a day or two. Besides, we have spent about Rs 1 lakh in promotional and tickets.”
He, however, assured that a show of bigger magnitude would be held within a few weeks to compensate for the cancelled show.
