An eight-year-old girl and her neighbour drowned in Kharkai river in Kadma police station area on Wednesday afternoon.
Chhoti Kumari (8) and Deepa Singh (30), both resident of a slum near Green Park, had gone to bathe in the river around 2pm when the incident occurred. While the child’s body was recovered by divers, that of the woman is still missing.
None knew how to swim.
Sources said while bathing on the banks, Chhoti slipped into the water. Deepa jumped into the water in a bid to save her. But both were swept away by the strong current.
Other bathers tried to save the duo but failed.
On being informed, a police team led by Kadma OC Raju Thakur reached the spot and engaged a team of divers from civil defence and Tata Steel security department.
After a two-hour-long search, the divers finally succeeded in locating the child’s body from about a kilometre away from where she was last seen.
The divers stopped their operation for the day at sunset.
Mazrul Bari, a diver from Tata Steel security department, said he would have continued the search operation at night too. But he had to abandon the thought as he did not have scuba diving gear and an underwater torch.
OC Thakur said the woman’s body could not be located despite persistent attempts.
“We will resume the search on Thursday morning. The child’s body has been sent to the MGM hospital for post-mortem,” he added.
