A young data entry operator and his father were arrested in Dhanbad on Wednesday for allegedly setting his estranged girlfriend on fire, days before she was to tie the knot with another man.
Jorapokhar resident Hasina Bano (21), fondly called Guria by family members, was rushed to Bokaro General Hospital from a Jharia nursing home with 80 per cent burns on Tuesday afternoon. She died during the course of treatment, but not before accusing her neighbour, Mohammad Adam Ansari (23), of the attack in her statement to police.
Guria also named Adam’s elder brothers Abdul (30) and Belal (26), younger brother Hamza (20) and father Jamaluddin (50) in her dying statement.
Dhanbad SP Anup T. Matthew said they were interrogating the arrested father-son duo in connection with the incident that took place in Bagdighi area of Jorapokhar, 15km from the district headquarters.
“The victim told police that her spurned lover poured kerosene on her while she stood on the terrace of her house around 1pm yesterday. We are probing the veracity of the account after which action will be taken against the accused,” the SP said.
According to sources in the neighbourhood, Adam was in love with Guria for some six years, but the girl’s family was averse to the relationship and fixed her a match in Niyamatpur in Burdwan district of Bengal.
Guria was to marry Faiyaz Ansari by October-end. This perhaps made Adam angry, they said.
However, answering media queries at DSP II Rajkumar Sinha’s office on Wednesday, Adam pleaded innocence. He claimed Guria had called him a dozen times on Tuesday and he went to her house to report the matter to her mother.
“She misbehaved with me. When I showed my call records to her family members, her cousin scolded her in front of me. After that I left,” Adam said.
He claimed he received the news of Guria attempting suicide by self-immolation after he reached home. “I think her fiancé too rebuked her for pursuing me because he had called me to find out details. I was shocked to hear the news. I loved her and called her Muskan.”
Adam added that Guria’s mother did not like him from the beginning and he had decided to sever ties with her to let her abide by her family’s wishes.
