A fourth-year student of Indian School of Mines (ISM) has made the Dhanbad cradle proud by bagging a prestigious scholarship sponsored by University College of London.
Twenty one-year-old Avinav Peshwani, who is pursuing an integrated MSc Tech course in applied geology at ISM, will undertake a five-week research stint on applied geochemistry at the university, starting from September 30.
His project is titled, Isotopic Analysis for Proterozoic Sedimentary Rock.
Peshwani, a resident of Varanasi, left Dhanbad for his hometown on Tuesday to meet his family before catching the flight to London on Thursday.
“I will do my best to successfully complete the project as the pride of not only ISM but the country is at stake,” he said over telephone, adding he was the only Indian among those selected for the International Student Dean Summer Student Scholarship this year.
University College of London, among the top four educational institutions of the world according to QS World University Rankings 2013, is also where Mahatma Gandhi studied law.
No wonder Peshwani, an avid follower of Gandhiji’s principles, is elated he will be there on occasion of his birth anniversary on October 2.
“I am super-excited. Despite being a science student, I am very much drawn towards Gandhian philosophy especially his saying —‘be the change you wish to see in the world.’ I consider myself fortunate to be selected by the same institution,” he said.
Peshwani said he had applied for the scholarship on the university’s website and sent a covering letter along with his detailed CV. “I was selected on the basis of it,” he added.
Sounds easy? Not quite.
The son of a businessman father, Peshwani’s resume reflects a zeal for hard work and dedication and commitment towards serving society.
For, he is associated with a number of social organisations, like the Dhanbad chapter of Let’s do it! World, and has organised several cleanliness drive across the coal town with school students.
Besides being good in studies, Peshwani has also proved his mettle in extracurricular activities.
He is co-ordinator of Srijan, the annual cultural festival of ISM-Dhanbad, and ISM student society Kartavya, which is engaged in providing education to slum children.
Peshwani is also secretary of the student chapter of Geological Society and an active member of another ISM student society, Fast Forward India.
