A young man was arrested in Mechhua on Tuesday after a mobile phone that was stolen from the Howrah-Chennai Mail on September 13 was found in his possession.
Police from Odisha tracked down the phone and arrived in Mechhua to arrest Akhtar Ali. The phone was among three handsets, six laptops and a hard disk that had been stolen on the train.
Among those who lost their laptops was an ONGC scientist who had come to Calcutta on work and was on his way to Tamil Nadu.
“The hard disk belonged to the scientist. It contained important data,” said a police officer. “The Odisha cops were trying to locate the stolen mobile phones and found that one of them was being used in Calcutta.”
Among the others whose belongings had been stolen were a software engineer and an executive of a private firm. All three had lodged complaints with the Government Railway Police in Cuttack on September 13. “The trio were travelling in an AC two-tier coach. When they woke up in the morning, the valuables were gone,” said the officer.
