Kuala Lumpur: Somdev Dev Varman celebrated his return to the top-100 by qualifying for the singles main draw of the ATP Malaysian Open with a straight sets victory over Jean-Julien Rojer, on Monday.
Somdev, who rose to 98 in ATP charts on Monday, edged past the unranked Dutch 7-5, 7-5 in the third and final qualifying round of the $ 875,500 hard court event.
Somdev had achieved a career-best rank of 62 in 2011 but struggled after that as a shoulder injury halted his progress.
Of late he has done well, reaching second rounds of the US Open and the ATP 500 event in Washington via qualifiers.
In the doubles, US Open champion Leander Paes (5), Rohan Bopanna (7) and Mahesh Bhupathi (10) remained unchanged in top-10.
In the doubles event of the same tournament, Yuki Bhambri has been a wild card along with local player Syed Naguib, Syed Mohd Agil.
However, they have a tough first round as they have drawn second seeds Julien Benneteau and Nenad Zimonjic, who are formidable doubles players. (PTI)
