Malda, Sept. 23: The police today arrested the husband of the Malda homemaker who was found dead in a creek on Saturday night, her body unclothed and limbs tied with ropes.
The woman’s husband is a labourer in Kerala. Two youths were also arrested in connection with the murder.
Police today said that the post-mortem had ruled out rape but said the woman was strangled to death.
The lady, a mother of a two-year-old girl, had been missing since Wednesday night and her father lodged a complaint on Thursday saying she was missing.
After the body was found in the creek in Gajole, barely 500m from the lady’s hut, the victim’s father filed another complaint with the police, naming three persons as suspects and alleged that his daughter had been raped and murdered.
Malda police superintendent Kalyan Mukherjee said that arrests were made based on the complaint filed by the victim’s father. “Three persons named by the victim’s father, including the husband, has been arrested and police is progressing with the investigation. We are yet to determine the exact motive behind the murder,” he said.
This afternoon, the lady’s husband Ujjwal Sarkar, 32, was arrested from the village in Gajole, about 30km from Malda town, where the woman used to live. The police said Ujjwal had told them he was away working in Kerala and had returned home today after hearing his wife was missing.
The police also arrested two others — Bishnu Mondal, 27, from Dalkhola in North Dinajpur and Bhajan Mondol, 32, from Gajole.
The police said Bishnu was a private car driver and Bhajan used to sell garments in village markets. Both are residents of the same village in Gajole where the homemaker stayed.
The police said the men used to visit the lady’s home.
The three would be produced in court tomorrow.
“We have been interrogating the three and have found inconsistencies in their replies. The husband of the victim claims that he was in Kerala when his wife went missing, but we are not satisfied with his answers. We have found out that both Bishnu and Bhajan used to take advantage of the victim being home alone as her husband was away,” said an investigating officer.
