Dhubri, Sept. 23: A criminal, Abdul Malek, 28, was shot dead in Dhubri district today.
He was brought to Dhubri civil hospital immediately after the incident in a critical condition. Doctors at the hospital referred him to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital in view of his fast deteriorating condition. He died while being taken to the GMCH, near Bilasipara.
A source said Malek, a resident of Dharmasala village had come to Kachuarkhas both under Dhubri police station and at a distance of 9km, with two youths on a bike around 10.30am. Villagers spotted the trio chatting on the road for hours together.
Around noon, when the area was deserted, villagers heard the sound of firing. When they came out of their houses, they saw the two youths who had accompanied Malek fleeing the scene, raising suspicion they were the assailants, a source said. Their identity is not yet known.
The officer-in-charge of Dhubri police station (Sadar), Manik Kalita, said Malek had a criminal background. “We are trying to identify the assailants to find out why Malek was killed,” he added.
