A youth allegedly molested two singers before he and two of his bike-borne friends tried to abduct the women from a spot close to Narkeldanga police station around 12.30am on Monday.
The youths fled after the driver of the taxi in which the singers were returning home to Dum Dum started screaming for help and alerted people on Canal East Road.
Following a complaint from the women, Narkeldanga police arrested the accused — Mohammad Dulara, Mohammad Hasnain and Mohammad Aslam.
The singers were accompanied by a youth named Samir Nayek.
“Nayek got off the taxi at the crossing of Narkeldanga Main Road and Raja Dinendra Road. The women waited in the taxi as he bought a packet of snacks from a stall nearby and handed it to them before leaving,” said Pallab Kanti Ghosh, the joint commissioner of police, crime.
“The taxi was about to start moving towards Phoolbagan when the youths intercepted them.”
According to the complaint lodged by the singers, the three youths came from behind and parked the bike in front of the taxi. Dulara, one of the pillion riders, allegedly opened the taxi’s front left door and started pulling the women by their hands.
“The other two youths told taxi driver Mohammad Habib Alam to follow their motorcycle. They threatened to shoot the driver if he dared disobey them,” said an officer of the police station.
The cabbie was too scared to protest. “He drove past Narkeldanga police station and crossed the bridge over the canal. Dulara was sitting beside Alam. The motorcycle took a left turn after crossing the bridge and hit Canal East Road. Alam kept following them,” said the officer.
Alam had to slow down because of potholes. “He noticed some local youths standing on the road. He stopped the taxi and screamed for help. The local youths rushed to him. Dulara by then exited the taxi and jumped on the two-wheeler. The trio fled,” said another officer of the police station.
“We conducted raids throughout the night and arrested the three youths. The victims identified them,” said the officer.
Canal East Road leads to a shanty colony where there are several hideouts. “It appears the youths wanted to abduct the two girls to a place where no one could find them easily. Had they been successful, the women would have been in big trouble,” the officer said.
The police are trying to find out whether the arrested trio have criminal antecedents.
