Kharagpur, Sept. 23: Around 300 residents of a Kharagpur pocket ransacked a Trinamul party office last night alleging that it had turned into a “den of criminals” .
Sources said the protest in Nimpura was triggered by an incident three days when local youths known in the area as Trinamul supporters passed lewd remarks at a woman.
“Some bike-borne youths who we know as Trinamul supporters passed lewd remarks at a woman and teased her. The youths have extortion and other cases against them. The woman wanted to lodge a police complaint but local Trinamul leaders persuaded her not to report the matter to the police and instead meet them at the party office. It has turned into a den of criminals,” said a resident who declined to be identified.
The 30-year-old woman was accompanied by a youth to the party office, where a known criminal, Bikash Singha, and his aide beat up the youth.
As news spread, the residents stormed the Trinamul office and ransacked it.
The district Trinamul denied the office had turned into a hideout of criminals.
