Calcutta: Mohun Bagan’s CS Sabeeth scored in the dying moments to neutralize a second-half strike from Sean Rooney, as Mohun Bagan drew with debutants Bengaluru FC in the first round of their Airtel I-League encounter at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Sunday.
The home team drew first blood in the 49th minute of the match, when their Australian striker Sean Rooney found the mark, against the run of play.
As the home team looked like making a dream debut, Mohun Bagan managed to save themselves the blushes with CS Sabeeth heading in. The equaliser came in the second half stoppage time.
Earlier, both teams missed a penalty each. Yusa Katsumi was the offender for the Calcutta giants in the first half itself. In the second half, Rooney missed the spot kick, missing an easy chance to complete a brace.
The Bangalore side made deep inroads into the Bagan territory. But strong midfield control, specially by Katsumi, saved the green-and-maroon brigade. But they failed to utilise the chances that came their way.
The closest they came to scoring in the first half, apart from the penalty, was in the 21st minute when Sabeeth’s shot was saved by Bengaluru FC keeper Pawan Kumar.
