Malda, Sept. 22: The unclothed body of a Malda homemaker was found last night, with her hands and legs tied and a cloth round her neck, in a creek 500m from her home.
Her father has lodged a complaint of rape and murder at Gajole police station, 30km from Malda.
The police were yet to make any arrest till late in the evening. An officer at Gajole police station said the woman’s father suspected her husband of involvement in the crime.
The 30-year-old woman’s husband works as a labourer in Kerala. The woman, who allegedly fell out with her husband and in-laws, had been living with her two-year-old daughter in a hut her father built for her.
Sources at the police station said the woman’s father, who lives a few houses away in Gajole, had filed another complaint on Thursday morning saying his daughter was missing since Wednesday. The father had lodged the complaint after the homemaker’s daughter told him that she had not seen her mother since she woke up on Thursday.
According to sources, the woman’s unclothed body was first seen floating in the creek last night by villagers in Gajole who informed the police. The body was identified by the woman’s father after he went to the spot.
According to Parimal Saha, the officer in charge of Gajole police station, a team went to the village last night and took the body to Malda Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem.
“The father has identified the body. He has also filed a complaint that she was raped and murdered. The body had started to decompose as it was in the water for long. There are indications that she was strangled to death as a cloth was tied round her neck. The crime was committed by more than one person and only an autopsy will reveal if she was raped,” Saha said.
The officer added that the police had got three names from the woman’s father.
According to sources, the woman was married earlier to a villager in Bamungola, also in Malda. She married for the second time four years ago after the first marriage ended.
“She married a person in Bamungola seven years ago. But the marriage did not last long. She married again. She fell out with her husband and in-laws and had been living near her father’s home. Her father had built a small hut in the village for her to stay,” an investigating officer said.
