Shillong, Sept. 21: Pro inner-line permit (ILP) groups today announced a fresh set of agitation programmes as the stand-off between them and the Meghalaya government over the permit system hardens.
After the dawn-to-dusk shutdown ended at 5pm yesterday, the groups have now called for a night road blockade to be effective across the state from Monday to Friday from 8pm to 5pm.
All offices will be picketed on Thursday and Friday, the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) information secretary Eldie Lyngdoh said this evening, after the groups’ leaders held a meeting to chalk out their next course of action.
The pressure groups comprise the Khasi Students’ Union, FKJGP, Jaintia Students’ Union, Jaintia Youth Federation, All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation, Ri Bhoi Youth Federation, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, Garo Students’ Union, Civil Society Women’s Organisation, Synjuk Seng Samla Shnong, Khasi Women Welfare and Development Association and others.
“As the government has chosen to remain adamant on our demand for the implementation of ILP, we are compelled to continue with our agitation programmes,” Lyngdoh said.
Thanking the public for extending their support to the pressure groups, he called on the people to continue with their support till the demand is met.
At the same time, he said the groups would not be browbeaten by government threats to arrest their leaders in connection with the ongoing agitation.
Since September 2, Meghalaya has been paralysed by shutdowns, picketing and night road blockades as the Mukul Sangma-government has brushed aside the demand to implement the ILP regime . Sangma has ruled out the possibility of holding talks as long as the groups agitate.
