Sept. 21: Eight youths allegedly held at gunpoint a polling official in Habra, North 24-Parganas, today and cast false votes.
They also smashed three EVMs, police said. Presiding officer Dijesh Banerjee said polling had to be suspended at ward 11for half an hour.
At another booth in the same ward, six youths held a gun to a voter’s head and tried to stop her from casting her ballot. They fled when the lady and other voters raised the alarm.
The CPM alleged that Trinamul was behind the attacks, a charge the ruling party denied.
In Birbhum’s Dubrajpur, suspected Trinamul activists picketed outside a booth in Satkenduli and prevented around 200 residents from voting. Three voters were allegedly roughed up.
Trinamul all-India general secretary Mukul Roy said polling in the 12 municipalities was free and fair.
